Hair Loss

hair loss

Alopecia is the medical term for baldness among people. Baldness happens in varying forms, including male pattern baldness, patchy baldness, and complete baldness.

The most common form of Alopecia is male pattern baldness, which, as the name suggests, affects mostly males. With this form of Alopecia, the hair follicles or roots become weaker and the hairs become thinner. Male pattern baldness results in patchy hair loss from the crown or circumference of head. In later stages, complete baldness may occur.

Medical solution for Baldness

Though there are solutions for baldness available on the market today, very few appreciably reduce hair loss or control baldness. For baldness, it is best to consult with a doctor and follow the advice with prescribed medication.

There is a new prescription drug for controlling baldness and reducing hair less for males called Propecia®

Propecia®

Propecia is an inhibitor produced by the pharmaceuticals company Merck. In laymen’s terms, this means that the Propecia ‘inhibits’ the enzyme type II 5- alpha reductase which makes the root weaker. Specifically, the alpha reductase works against the male hormone testosterone and converts it into dihydrotestosterone (DHT) which damages the hair follicles and makes its root weaker, causing hair loss. Propecia® restricts the actions of DHT, therefore reducing the hair loss and controlling the baldness or alopecia in males.

Causes of Baldness

According to medical research, the main cause of baldness is genetic. The hormonal changes described above are then responsible for the baldness, with the male hormone DHT or dihydro-testosterone the primary factor which brings about baldness in males.

Beyond DHT, hair care products, including detergent-based or chemical shampoos, hair conditioners or styling hair gels affect the hair follicles, and may bring about some hair loss.

Testosterone is not present in females, which is why hair loss is rare among women. Women are strictly prohibited from using Propecia®
